The Reason

I just wanted to take some time to explain why I'm writing this blog. First and foremost, it is an assignment, so the educational aspect represents my personal findings of what my true passion is, aviation. We will look at 5 women within my blog.

They are:
  • Blanche Stuart Scott
  • Katherine and Marjorie Stinson
  • Cornelia Fort
  • Bessie Coleman

These women were the first to accomplish something great for women within the field of aviation. Blanche Stuart Scott was the first American woman to solo in an aircraft, Katherine Stinson was the first female acrobatic pilot, her sister Marjorie was the first woman airmail pilot, Cornelia Fort was the first female pilot to die during active military duty and Bessie Coleman was the first African-American, male or female to receive a pilots license.

Before they came along, it was unheard of for women to pilot an aircraft, let alone serve in the military and do acrobatic tricks in one! However they pushed back against authority and made their dreams come true. They fought against all odds to realize their ambitions.

These women were honest, courageous, and hard-working. They made sacrifices many people today wouldn't even consider. They were true pioneers who overcame so much adversity in order to accomplish their goals, live their dreams and succeed. It was through their dedication that they made themselves known and made aviation what it is today.

If these women had not existed I do not know how the aviation industry would look today for women. If it was not for them being the first to accomplish such impressive goals, another woman would have come along and done it, perhaps. However, women like myself are thankful I will not have to wonder what might have been, thanks to their hard work. Without them women might not have gotten the respect and opportunities that we now have.

The goal of this work is to hopefully show others who may not know, how bold these pilots were. They deserve recognition for all that they have done, they should be household names for the heroes that they are and I hope that by telling their stories I can do them justice.

These posts are just a small look into only a few of the brave women that helped pave the way for women like me. I can honestly say that if it wasn't for these women, and so many others like them, there would not be a place for me within my field. They set a standard that women had just as much talent and passion as male pilots, and because of this they inspired so many other women, like myself.
